Friday Alyssa and I decided to go to Cinque Terre which are 5 small cities that are connected by the water and a pathway that you can hike through. We got there a tiny bit later than we had anticipated because when we got to the train station, the only train was an hour after we thought we were supposed to leave at. Apparently that internet site does not have the correct times for the trains. So we took a near 10 o'clock train that would eventually take 2 hours, or a little more. We got on the train and a couple sat across from us. They are from Minnesota and have been to Cinque Terre once before so they gave us lots of pointers about what to go to do and what to see. They were an older couple, not anywhere near our age, but some of the nicest people ever. The woman had some snacks from the U.S. and tried to offer some to us because me and Alyssa were so excited to see Nature Valley and crackers with cheese! We are two silly girls. We did not take any in fear that it might make us sick because every time I have eaten outside of Italy, okay one time in Belgium, I ended up getting really sick from the food. We made it there around 12:30, and had to take an additional train into Riomaggiore which is the first city. We got there and bought our park ticket, the woman at the counter was so nasty, I do not think she likes Americans. She did not really tell us that part of the walking trail was closed due to landslides. So when we got to that portion we were upset because we could not get to the next city. So we figured out that you could take a train to the next one, but we of course had bought the walking ticket so had to pay a tiny bit more for the train, I think it was all of 1 euro, so nothing too extreme. It started to rain and the train ended up working out a lot better for us. We made it through 4 out of the 5 cities because by the time we got to the last one it was almost 7:30 and we wanted to get back. We ended up getting on the longest train ever.. with the strangest people. I am not kidding. There was a guy with lips tattooed on his neck, a guy who would scratch his head than sniff his hands and a guy who was literally gnawing on his fingers. It was so insane and we were so tired. We managed to get back to the apartment at 12:30am. Woah nelly.
The beautiful ocean as soon as we set foot on the walking path.
The first path you enter is Via Dell'Amore which is the Trail for Lovers, it winds around the cliffs leading you into the next city.
The city of Monorola. It is the second town on the pathway.
This is where we ate in Monorola. The awning on the right hand side right behind the boats. Delicious pesto spaghetti and the picture below :)
Cinque Terre is known for their white wine... and boy was it good. A lot of vineyards lie in this area, they are smaller vineyards and everything is done by hand because machinery cannot get up the steep hills, so this is why there is not a lot of output in the area and the wine is specific to this region.
After walking up 382 steps you are greeted with this sign! This was to get to the top of Corniglia, the third city out of the five. We walked down the stairs too.. wooo eee that hurt.
This is Vernazza, the fourth city and final one we made it too. It was getting very late and we needed to get the train back home.
Vernazza is a much more alive city with shops and beaches. I only wish it could have been warmer and the sun would have been out! I would have been one happy girl, even more happy than I already was.
So the next blog will be about Greece. I leave on Friday morning for 8 days. I will hopefully keep you updated with what is going on in my life. Love you all!
