For our second study tour we visited a few small places for a day about three hours south of Florence. We started with Il Giardino Dei Tarocchi which is a garden with sculptures created by Niki Saint-Phalle. While creating this garden, she lived within one of the sculptures. All of the ceramic tiles were handmade and created specifically for the project on site. Each of the sculptures work as tarot cards and have a mini description for each.
This is the Magician on top (silver) and the High Prestess. The Magician is card number one, and the High Prestess is card number 2.
This is Death, card number 13. Based on the Grim Reaper.
The Devil is Tarot card 15.
This is the Hier Orphant card number 5.
The World, card number 21.
A random dragon sculpture that is not part of the tarot cards, but there are many of these in the garden that are all part of a story and part of Nikis plan for the garden area.
This is Justice, she is supposed to be like a scale tarot card number 7.
This is another random sculpture that is a woman dumping water out of her jugs. Very pretty and lots of mirrored tiles.
Emily and I in front of another sculpture that was very different.
This is the entrance into the Empress where Niki lived while creating the sculpture garden.
This is her living room.
Kitchen.
Bathroom
Bedroom
Temperance is card number 14 and is really interesting with blue mirrored pieces and a sphere that you can walk into the igloo looking part and the space is completely mirrored and has sort of an altar piece with lots of flower patterns.
The Moon, card number 17. It is in a random part of the garden is really a nice element with not as much mirrored pieces and very different textures.
The dragon and the lady.
Right next to the garden there is a cow pasture. SO RANDOM.
A museum exhibit we went to in San Gimignano.
